Forestry, County still fighting fire in West Escambia: Personnel from the Florida Division of Forestry’s Blackwater Forestry Center continue to fight a 170-acre wildfire in southwest Escambia County. Forestry crews were first called to the fire, known as the Waycross 3 Fire because it was the third time in two days wildland firefighters had been called to Waycross Road off Gulf Beach Highway, around midday Sunday. The majority of the fire was contained by 7:30 p.m. Sunday and crews monitored the situation overnight and returned with four bulldozers this morning. Highway 98 was closed from Blue Angel Highway to Fairfield Drive for several hours Sunday but reopened before 7 p.m. The fire is considered active and new flare ups have been reported but smoke has not been an issue and crews are making progress strengthening the fire lines. No structures have been threatened by this fire.
